Would anyone care to offer comment on the make and model of the attached twin-engine amphibian. It looks like a Grumman, but we are getting different opinions as to the model: Mallard, Widgeon or Goose. Your views are welcomed.

Canada’s new Museum of Aviation and Space

The Canadian Aviation Museum is now the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum! The announcement was made in early May as a special event featuring Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk. 

A new partnership between the Canada Science and Technology Museum Corporation (CSTMC) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has resulted in a new mandate for the institution: to make the general public aware of the accomplishments of the Canadian space exploration program. As the space program is seen as a logical extension of aviation, the change marks a natural evolution for the national institution.

The change has brought renovations: there will soon be an amphitheatre with a communications system that will be permanently linked to the international space station, and there will be facilities for organizing meetings with Canadians coast to coast. Another reason to go have a look on your next visit to Ottawa!

Vancouver Chapter
 
The Vancouver Chapter of the CAHS meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, except for July,  August and statutory holidays, at 1900 hours(7 PM) at the Richmond Cultural Centre, Minoru Boulevard, Richmond, B.C.    
 
Our meeting location is the Board Room, on the Main Floor of the RCC,  down the hall to the right, behind the main Auditorium.  This is now our long-term home, as we are able to book it on our normal evening for the full year in advance.

I am off to the CAHS Convention and Air Force Historical Workshop on Monday(31 May), but will be back in time for the June meeting on the 8th.  This will be our last meeting until September.
 
I THOUGHT I had an interesting speaker lined up for June, Professor Stanley Copp from Langara College, who was going to speak to us about Aviation Archaeology.  He has been investigating some wartime RCAF crash sites in B. C. as well as in the Aleutian Islands.   He is also involved in the U. S. group that recovers and identifies human remains from military crash sites in places such as Vietnam.
 
Professor Copp contacted me today and unfortunately he has had a medical problem that has lasted longer than expected, which will keep him from our June meeting.   I will arrange to reschedule him for the Fall.
 
I have asked Jim and Keith to try to put something together on short notice for June.  If one of you have something that you would like to show in June, contact Keith or Jim.  Failing that, I will bring some aviation videos that we can enjoy with our new digital projector.
 
With a digital projector in hand, we are hoping that this will open up the meetings to a wider range of presenters and presentations.  Borrowed projectors have not worked out about 3 times out of 4, and the Richmond Cultural Centre want $ 50 to rent theirs for an evening.   In the future we should have no excuse for digital presentations that fail to work!!
 
Keith has been experimenting with our new Vancouver Chapter digital projector and we now know that it will work just fine with both Jim Jorgenson’s laptop and Keith’s laptop.  
 
I will send out an update on the June program after I return from Montreal.
 
2010 Chapter Dues
 
The 2010 Chapter membership dues of $ 10 are now payable.   Thank you very much to those of you who have already paid and those that have made a donation to the Chapter.
 
As I noted earlier, we had to donate $ 500 to National HQ as our Chapter’s contribution towards development of a new National Website.  The purchase of a digital projector has further depleted our funds back to where they were 10 or more years ago, which will leave us operating on a very tight margin.
 
Since we were forced to move downstairs from the Richmond Arts Centre to the Richmond Cultural Centre, our meeting room rental has gone from almost free to $ 20 + GST per meeting.    This is not a lot compared to what some Chapters have to pay, but we need to cover it every year. 
 
Another legal requirement is that we must maintain a minimum of 10 National Members as Paid-Up Chapter Members, or we could be subject to being shut-down by National HQ.   If you are not a CAHS National Member, but attend and/or support our Chapter Meetings, your Chapter Dues are also very much appreciated, but the most urgent need is for at least 10 bone-fide National Members to pay the annual dues!!   So far, we haven’t seen many dues from National Members.  Even if you are unable to attend the meetings, your support is needed to keep the Chapter operating.
 
WE STILL NEED MORE OF THE NATIONAL MEMBERS IN THE AREA TO COME FORWARD TO SUPPORT THE CHAPTER BY SUBMITTING CHAPTER DUES.
 
Please bring along your Chapter Dues to the next meeting, better still, do it now and mail a cheque to me, made out to “CAHS Vancouver Chapter”, to 3489 Lakedale Avenue, Burnaby, BC, V5A 3E2.
 
If you have not yet renewed your National Membership, it is now overdue!!

Note that Keith Wade is still looking for fresh people to give Chapter presentations, and the Chapter can’t always rely on he and I and Jim and a couple of others to entertain us ever month at the meetings, even though most of us have 50 years worth of slides!!  If you have something worthwhile to show, contact Keith at (604) 985-6202.
